The USA’s Carrier Dominance on the High Seas

With as big of a victory as Pearl Harbor was for the Japanese back in the beginning of World War II, it still left them with a bittersweet taste in their mouth. Why you might ask; the answer is because the main purpose of the attack was to destroy the three aircraft carriers in the USA’s Pacific Fleet and they failed to get even one. With all the damage that surprise attack did, it failed to achieve its ultimate objective. Carriers were that important to waging war back then and they are just as important today. Most anyone can tell you the USA has the most aircraft carriers in its Navy, but the actual figures and comparisons make it by far one of the USA’s more impressive military advantages.

Why can the USA claim this advantage? A lot of it is due to the fact that the USA possesses 19 of the 36 active duty aircraft carriers in the world; that means that the USA has over half of the world’s aircraft carriers. That is a dominant statistic that is made even more dominant if you look at the capabilities of the other aircraft carriers involved; many can only carry helicopters or vertical landing and takeoff jets such as Harriers – which are no match for the more sophisticated land based attack aircraft that many countries possess. The USA has 10 Nimitz-class “supercarriers” which can launch a vast array of sophisticated attack and defense aircraft that are far superior to most country’s jets that can be launched off aircraft carriers.

Another thing that sets the USA’s supercarriers apart from the rest of the world is the fact that they are nuclear powered. This gives them unlimited range without refueling – which means they can sail anywhere in the world on a moment’s notice without having to worry about refueling.  The only other nuclear powered aircraft carrier in the world is France’s ‘Charles de Gaulle’; it is France’s only true aircraft carrier. Most other aircraft carriers run on either diesel or a combination of gas and diesel engines. This is a huge advantage for the US Military.

CarrierA Quick Look at Other Nation’s Aircraft Carriers

Currently, Russia has only has one active aircraft carrier with no plans for adding another at the moment. The ship is so unreliable it has an ocean-going tug that travels everywhere with it on long voyages.

China just launched its first aircraft carrier that is actually a retrofitted sister ship of Russia’s lone aircraft carrier. They are in the process of building another one and have plans to add two more in the future.

United Kingdom

The UK has an aircraft carrier scheduled for completion in 2020 and another scheduled for commissioning in 2020 which will use F-35 Aircraft.

A nation that once boasted one of the most powerful aircraft carrier forces in the world, Japan now has only three helicopter carriers.

India has two retrofitted aircraft carriers including one large carrier that boasts what is most likely the 2nd most powerful air wing after the United States carriers; it features some 36 modern MiG-29K fighter aircraft.

It is clear to see that the USA’s Aircraft Carrier domination on the high seas should continue well into the foreseeable future.

  1. I agree, but how impressive will we be if we continue to have “leaders” like we have currently. I am referring to members in congress as well as the senate and Obama goes without saying. Voters should take a close look at their reps and remove those who don’t love this country as much as they do. The Obama admin is always on some type of apology tour, doing all they can to degrade this country. The country I and many others put our lives on the line to make great. Not to mention the number of HEROS who have given their lives in defense of this country.
Just saying, those who work for this country should love this country. If that’s not part of who you are then perhaps flipping burgers should be in your future.
