It has been years since we had a good conspiracy theory turned paperback novel. Two ranchers are ordered to appear in court, and a militia group stages a peaceful protest. Then things get a little weird when they seize federal property, declaring that they will stay for years, and threaten violence if the government tries to remove them.
Their argument: the federal government is imposing its unconstitutional will on the rightful owners of the land- the people. They believe, and they have demonstrated a willingness to break the law to express their beliefs, that the government is attacking the honest, hard-working ranchers. In this case, the two ranchers, a father and son pair, were accused and convicted of illegally hunting deer on the Bureau of Land Management property, and then starting a fire to ‘light up the whole country on fire.’ The seemingly damning statements were testified in court by relatives of the pair.
So it would make sense that, in desperation to protect themselves, the two called all of the local militias to make a stand with them. Except that this isn’t the case. The ring leader for the group seems to be Ammon Bundy, who comes from Arizona. He called for militiamen to follow and somewhere in the ballpark of 20 – 150 have. For clarity of discussion, the concept of a militia will refer to what is actually by law known as the Reserve Militia, or the unorganized militia which can consist of able-bodied men between the ages of 17 to 45.
This distinction is important, because it seems like nowadays everyone wants to use words that have meaning, even if they don’t meet the definition of the words. It would be like using weapons and threatening force to take something that is illegal, and then calling yourself a patriot for doing so.
The irony of course, is that the group is claiming that the federal government is imposing its will on people through the threat of force, and they are responding by doing the exact same. In this situation though, the two ranchers who were convicted in the first place do not support the actions of the group, and their lawyer has publically stated as much.
It is ironic that we find ourselves in a time when individual people travel across state lines in order to seize federal property and proclaim themselves as defenders of the people, the very same people that do not support the group in the first place. Forgetting for a second the reality that even family members of the ranchers testified against them in open court for starting the fire, and forgetting that the pair do not want the ‘militia’ to continue its actions, we find ourselves at a junction.
On the one hand, the militia group may be able to spin this to show the average people how the federal government is the real enemy. Hopefully though, the more intelligent people will look at this for what it really is, a group of people that are just out to make a name for themselves by committing crimes and threatening violence – which makes them criminals in any state.
