On Thursday October 1st yet another community, this time Roseburg, Oregon, fell victim to a senseless act of violence when a mass shooter killed 9 and injured 7 students and faculty. Before the full story of events had even unfolded, the President took to the White House podium to call for an end to the violence through “common sense gun safety laws.” But what did he really say?
Within hours of the shooting at an Oregon community college, an obviously upset President Obama addressed the press and repeated his often-heard call for additional restrictions on gun ownership – now referred to as “common sense gun safety laws.” In doing so, he made several statements which sounded good, and appeared to strengthen his point, but which should cause anyone who follows the firearms debate some pause.
First, the President claimed that the reason these crimes continue to occur is because America is negligent in not following the lead of other “civilized nations” who have stricter gun control. “The United States of America is the one advanced nation on Earth in which we do not have sufficient common-sense gun-safety laws – even in the face of repeated mass killings.” Obama continued “We know other countries, in response to one mass shooting, have been able to craft laws that almost eliminate mass shootings. Friends of our, allies like Great Britain, Australia, countries like ours…”
Of course, he failed to acknowledge that America is unlike any other advanced nation on Earth – we have a Constitution which grants the right to bear arms to ALL citizens. This is not pro-gun rhetoric, it is the repeated opinion of the United States Supreme Court. Furthermore, his claim that other nations have enacted “common-sense gun-safety laws” to prevent such events ignores the fact that none of these countries EVER provided the citizens the right to own private firearms without layer after layer of restriction. Very few of these restrictions were the result of gun safety, but instead rooted in hundreds of years of tyrannical rule.
Second, the President claimed that the repeated failure of his gun control measures was not the will of the people, but a misguided attempt by politicians and special interest groups to stall what everyone else wants by stating that “the majority of Americans understand we should be changing these laws- including the majority of responsible law-abiding gun owners.” Obama continued “This is a political choice that we make to allow this to happen…”
I, for one, was surprised to learn that the majority of Americans think the current laws should be changed. I honestly cannot believe anyone would even suggest, never mind outright state, that a majority of responsible gun owners support more restrictive gun laws – especially since the current administration’s idea of “common-sense” means expanding the “no gun zones” to YOUR home.
I suggest that what the majority of Americans, including gun owners, do want is common-sense enforcement of the current gun laws. Instead of threatening an otherwise law abiding mom who crosses a state line with a concealed weapon, apply that same effort to locking up and never letting out the repeat offender, career criminals who use illegal handguns time after time but continue to walk the streets. Rather than criminalizing legal gun owners who are the victim of theft for not “properly securing” their firearms, let’s try to hold accountable the thief who stole the guns in the first place!
