The Continued Attack on the 2nd Amendment

There are few topics in American culture as polarizing as that of gun control. Feelings are strong on both sides of the aisle, and it is unlikely that the two sides will ever come together for a final solution. However, the courts have repeatedly sided with the one point of view that matters, that of the Founding Fathers, and struck down as unconstitutional law after law that has impinged on the average citizen’s right to keep and bear arms, yet the attacks continue.

Every time a firearm is used illegally, especially in a horrific multiple murder, the media does not focus on why the killer would do such a thing, but simply that a firearm was used. Of course, this is quickly followed by outrage that someone who was mentally ill and had a criminal record or a history of domestic abuse could have access to a firearm to begin with. This is usually a precursor to a call for more gun control laws restricting what type of firearm can be owned, how many firearms you can purchase in a given time frame or where you can carry your legally owned firearm. Supporters will claim wide spread ownership of firearms is archaic; gun control is for the safety of the children and that those who disagree are simply unwilling to do what is necessary for the greater good. What they will never admit is the truth – there is no proof that gun control works.

2nd Amendment SideGun grabbers like to point to the reduced number of gun related crimes outside the United States, which is true if you discount the numerous war torn nations across the globe or the fact that killers in other nations simply use other means of inflicting their harm. They also discount the statistics that indicate a decrease in crime in communities which allow less restricted access to legal firearms. What they do is push for more laws, more restrictions and more hurdles for legal gun ownership, all in an attempt to simply wear down the resistance.

Gun Free Zones, limits on magazine capacity and restrictions on concealed carry are all promoted as means to providing a safer community. After all, if it is illegal to do something, who would do it, right? Of course, many Americans realize that this is a pipedream. Rational people understand that someone who is willing to kill a dozen people in cold blood, complete strangers they have never seen before in their life, will not think twice about breaking additional laws concerning the type of firearm they use or whether it was properly registered. All these laws do is provide the would-be killer with an unprotected pool of victims.

If America is serious about combating the senseless gun violence, they should call upon their elected officials and demand not that they enact more gun control legislation but that they enforce the volumes of laws that already exist. When a convicted felon is caught with a firearm, force the judges to put them in prison, not parole them to the street to try again. If a firearm is used in a violent crime, do not allow plea deals which drop the charges to a lesser non-violent charge; hold them accountable for what they did. Make criminals nationwide realize that there are consequences for breaking the laws we already have. Adding more laws to the books will not punish criminals, it will simply make criminals out of otherwise law abiding citizens who can no longer understand what they can or cannot do or where they can do it.
