I am angry today after the shootings in Dallas of the police and transit officers there. I just don’t understand why such events take place in this modern world. I also don’t understand why people don’t see things as I do and have more respect for law enforcement officers and for all the good they do for our country. The attacks appear to be in direct response to two incidents of alleged police brutality against African-Americans in other parts of the country.
I have seen the videos of the incidents where the two African American men were shot and killed by police officers in Minnesota and Baton Rouge. Did the incidents look bad and unjustified on camera? There certainly is a strong case to be made for that. I also know that I was not there. I did not have to make split second decisions based on what was quickly unfolding and I did not know if my own life was in imminent danger at the time. All I saw was somewhat mediocre video that only captured a very small part of the incident. That is why we have a justice system and courts to sort these things out. The one thing I do know about both these incidents was the police officers involved in the shootings did not wake up in the morning and plan the incidents that took place.
What happened in Dallas was totally different. It was planned. It was calculated. It was nothing short of cold blooded murder of innocent law enforcement officers that were totally unconnected to the incidents in Minnesota and Baton Rouge.
Are there bad police officers that have racial prejudice and harbor ill will towards African Americans? I think any person that does not believe this to be true should have their head examined. In any large sized sample of people, such as police officers, you are going to have some bad apples for sure that bring disgrace down upon the vast majority of good police officers that do their jobs in an exemplary fashion. You don’t solve the problems in society with racial disparity or excessive use of force by killing other police officers.
What is the worst thing about the tragedy and senseless killings in Dallas besides the senseless loss of life? It is the way the country will react to it as a whole. There will be no professional athletes wearing T-shirts in warm ups that say “Cop’s lives matter.” There will be no mass protests in all of the major cities decrying the incident. I even suppose a few people on the other side of the racial divide that is growing once again in this country will applaud the act despite the fact that is exactly the wrong way to go about solving the lingering racial problems that exist in this country.
What do I know for sure? The fact that, for every incident where a person of African American descent has his life taken seemingly unnecessarily by a police officer, there are many more lives lost by police officers in the line of duty across America. There is no place in America for this eye for an eye type of misguided justice and our police officers are heroes that put their lives on the line every day for us. Nothing will ever justify what took place in Dallas on July 7th, 2016.
One thing that makes America great is that the actions of many have always spoken much louder than the actions of a few and that is exactly what is needed to bring our great melting pot country back together again and solve the issues that remain heavy before us.
