I’m not a big government kind of guy; I believe that Thomas Jefferson hit on an absolute truth when he supposedly said “that government is best that rules the least.” Unfortunately, our federal government is doing its best to not only prove that axiom correct, they are doing it in such a way that is condescending to the people that they supposedly answer to.
Instead of beating a dead horse first, let’s take a look at the current debate on global climate change. After releasing a controversial study that supposedly debunks the pause in global warming, Kathryn Sullivan, head of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) was asked by Congress to provide them with the data and deliberations that were involved in the study.
In the two months since she refused, she has garnered support from hundreds of scientists and researchers for her stand against the government “establishing a practice of inquests” on global climate change. The situation would be laughable if it wasn’t so insane.
First, Sullivan works for the NOAA which works for the federal government- who want to see the data. If I refused to turn over my data and deliberations at my job, I wouldn’t have one. Why does she?
Second, why are non-scientists being told that we have to take the NOAA at their word? This is the same organization that claimed that 2014 would be the hottest year on record. They later retracted that statement, but the damage to their credibility was done.
Third, since when are scientific results a secret? If you want to prove that manmade global warming is a real thing, you should have your results checked, verified and documented. Keeping them secret makes it appear that the data was manipulated to fit the theories you are trying to push. That is completely backwards to the way scientific query should work.
Now, on to beating that dead horse.
The Veteran’s Administration managed to get its name back in the news, again. Thankfully, this time, no one has died, but a couple of their administrators are showing just how great of a job it is to be working for the VA.
Two senior executives were demoted for what amounts to fraud. They weren’t fired, they weren’t charged with a crime and they have been retained by this shining example of federal government efficiency even after defrauding the VA of $400,000.
Diana Rubens and Kimberly Graves forced two lower level administrators to leave their positions and accept transfers to different positions. Graves and Rubens took over their positions with no reduction in pay. Even though the responsibilities and duties were considerably lighter than the positions they held.
The best part of this? When the Inspector General’s report on the shameful episode finally got to Congress, the response from Deputy Secretary Sloan Gibson to the House Veteran’s Affairs Committee was jaw-dropping, to say the least.
“We won’t administer punishment based on IG opinions, referrals to the Department of Justice, recycled and embellished media accounts, or external pressure,” Gibson said. “It’s simply not right, and it’s not in the best interest of the veterans we serve.”
Maybe Gibson should ask some of those veterans.
