Keys to Surviving TDY

The greatest possible thing to ever receive while being in the service is orders for TDY. Basically, a work trip but in the military, it usually means jump school or air assault for example if you’re in the Army. Most new soldiers who go on TDY for the first time go absolutely bonkers because they think, “Oh I’ll get paid for it later.” This is true but mostly false. The government has a predetermined amount that they will pay you per diem.

The biggest thing to remember is DON’T go down to the local Tilted Kilt or Hooters and spend all your money trying to hit on the hot waitress you think is interested in you when she’s already been hit on by every other soldier that has come in. You will get “paid back” at the end of TDY but it’s like $11 a meal per day. If you can go to the commissary and cook as much as possible. I know it’s not always fun to make food but in the end, it will be a whole lot cheaper and save you a lot in the long run. The goal is to actually “make” money at the end. I’m not saying you can’t go out and have a nice meal just don’t always get the d*mn surf and turf with the 18-ounce steak and lobster tails. Plus, if you buy food you can meal prep.

The next biggest killer is hitting the town and buying the bar. First of all, I know TOP told you in the safety brief not to run buck wild and wind up locked up. Trust me I’ve seen it happen to a good soldier who made friends with the blue falcon. Party it up, experience the area, just don’t go full frat boy. You don’t want to be that guy or gal that starts the base “Days without a DUI” counter back to zero.

Don’t buy the top of the line gear. For me being TDY at a selection course I needed certain equipment that the PCSers got issued. Be real, the service wasn’t going to give you the Surefire stuff anyways. So why would you go and buy? You’ll either break it when you fall flat rucking, lose it or get it stolen by the company thief. Don’t pretend like you don’t know who it is. Hell, it could be you, and if it is I hope you like rock socks.

Keep all this in mind and you might actually come out on top. I know I sure did when I came of TDY. Keep your head on a swivel and watch your six causes only you can truly control your money.
