General Mattis for President

Both of the Republican and Democratic Conventions are just around the corner, yet neither party has established a clear favorite nor have any of the candidates collected enough electoral votes to guarantee the nomination. Some Americans have had enough and are ready to simply give up on both parties; but instead of sitting out this election, they have decided to select their own candidate – General James Mattis, USMC (ret.).

When the possibility of having retired General Mattis run for President was first reported on the Daily Beast, many believed it to be a hoax. The General has never expressed any interest in running, has missed the majority of major contests and is not on the ballot in any of the remaining contests. But if anyone can beat those odds, it might very well be General Mattis.

Obviously, if Mattis is not even on the ticket, the odds of winning are greatly decreased. However, IF he were to appear on the remaining primary ballots could he manage a win? Even after losing the opportunity to be considered in so many major contests? According to experts, the answer is “Yes.” First, Mattis would need to appear on each of the remaining primary tickets. Second, he would need to obtain enough electoral votes to prevent the others from receiving 270. Third, he would need to convince Congress that, with no clear winner, they should declare Mattis Commander-in-Chief – which surprisingly they can if no one collects the necessary electoral votes.

MattisAs unlikely as this situation is, the idea of Mattis entering the race is not a crazy pipedream – at least not as crazy as some may think. First, he is an obvious war hero in a post-war political climate and Americans have repeatedly turned to former military leaders to rebuild the nation following a war. Second, not only is he widely popular there are a growing number of voters who would support anyone other than the current candidates. Third, recent shifts in both parties mean that, as unlikely as the scenario may be, it is possible.

There is only one slight speed bump in the Mattis highway to the Whitehouse – the General has not agreed to even be considered a candidate – but that’s not going to keep his supporters from moving full steam ahead. Not only has he never expressed an interest in being President, he has repeatedly rebuffed attempts by journalists to even discuss the issue- claiming it was not for him. But wishful thinking supporters are counting on his strong personal commitment to the nation and it’s well-being to drive him into the race regardless of his own feelings. They are counting on him to make a personal sacrifice and do what needs to be done for the greater good. In other words, they are expecting a decorated, retired Marine Corps General to act like … well a decorated, retired Marine Corps General.

I do not know if the General will ever appear on a ballot anywhere, nor whether or not he would win if he did. However, I would surely vote for him and I know many others would as well. Regardless of the outcome, it would certainly liven up the election.
