Federal Hiring Freeze Catches Services Off Guard

It may be a sign of the times, as bases are being forced to cut back on services that they offer to military personnel and dependents. These cut backs are due to the recent federal hiring freeze that President Trump directed in January. For those who are stationed Camp Lejeune and Air Station New River in North Carolina, the cuts are already hitting home.

Announced on Facebook, of all places, Marine Corps Community Services Lejeune-New River reported that its hourly child care at the child development centers would be suspended, effective February 23. It also announced that other cuts would be taking place, and these included fewer hours of operation at the Marine Marts, the closure of the Central Marine mart and gas station, and the closing of the New River Rec Equipment facility.

If you are asking yourself what a freeze on hiring has to do with bases reducing services, you are not alone. Is there really that much turnover at base day care facilities? That much turnover at base rec centers? This author does not know the answers to those questions, and evidently, nor do may of the services, as they, too, are being caught off guard and are having to make quick decisions that are not always in the best interests of military personnel or their families.

These sorts of cuts are being reported now across the globe – at bases where these types of services are actually very important. Just because bases are no longer providing services such as day care, does not mean those services are no longer needed. When I was stationed in Germany with my wife and two young daughters, we either depended on another military spouse to babysit when my wife found employment, or we had to consider going out to find someone trustworthy. Because of language barriers, increased costs, and added travel, we never resorted to hiring a local – but what about those who have to now?

Perhaps, this will get sorted out soon before negative effects become too prevalent. One can only hope so, as our military already have enough to worry about. They do not need these additional burdens laid upon them!
