Fall 2018 – New Tactical Products

Bindi Headlamp by Petzl

There was a time when I could not imagine myself wearing a headlamp. Give me a trusty flashlight and let me do my thing. Now, I can’t imagine not having one in my go bag. Not only is it a great way to illuminate the task at hand, it lets me do so handsfree. One of the best I have used was made by Petzl and the Bindi is the latest model they offer. It’s lightweight, powerful, and charges via any USB port.

MOB+ Wireless Man Overboard System

Engine cutoff switches are mandatory in almost every jurisdiction, yet the very marine enforcement officers who ensure others are wearing this important safety device often leave their own hanging unused. Sure, everyone has a reason for doing so, but that doesn’t make it any safer. With a wireless man overboard system there is no longer an excuse. The MOB+ installs easily and allows as many as four people to be linked to a single system, disabling or sending a warning when the FOB gets wet or moves out of range.

Body-Worn Computers

Body cameras are becoming the norm for law enforcement, but they are not the latest in personal camera technology – body worn computers are. By harnessing the power and capability of a smartphone, you get much more than a video recording device – you get the ability to combine a camera, video recorder, audio recorder, and personnel locator all in one device. The best is that device is also the smartphone you are also carrying. Visual Labs, a leader in smartphone body computer systems, also offers cloud storage and real time sharing with command center staff.

Altama Maritime Assault Shoes

Every officer knows the importance of having the right shoes for the job. If you are a maritime officer you know the challenge of finding that right shoe. Not only do you need durability and comfort, you also need slip-proof soles and materials that will not be destroyed by getting wet. Enter the Maritime Assault shoe by Altama. Available in either low or mid heights, these shoes are specifically designed for the maritime officer. The canvas upper dries quickly and is not prone to rot caused by hours in the water, and it’s thick enough to be comfortable and durable at the same time. Plus, if you are a diver, it is nice to know these shoes are designed to fit most military style fins in use.

Garmin tactix Charlie

There are a few items I refuse to go without and rarely skimp on – boots, a good knife, and a dependable watch. If you are in the market for the latter, then you need to give the tactix a serious look. This is a true smart watch-tactical tool combo. You have dozens of features, from GPS to altimeter, and the carbon coated titanium housing will withstand everything you and mother nature can dish out. Plus, it is made by Garmin – a trusted name in outdoor electronics.

It is gear time! One of my favorite things to do is share new gear with you the readers. The only thing I like better is testing it. Below are 5 new products focusing on personal protection- from both bad guys and bad things. So, without further delay, lets see what you can look forward to in your gear bag.

Patriot Gun Cleaning Kit

Sometimes you need a full armorer’s kit, and sometimes you just need the essentials – something you can slip in a pocket and take on the go. The answer to the “take along kit” is the Patriot Gun Cleaning Kit by Otis. Kits are available in a wide range of calibers, so chances are they have your personal needs covered. Each includes double ended all-purpose receiver brush, bronze bore brush, 8” Memory-Flex cable with slotted top, t-handle that functions as rod handle and bit driver, four common bits, and reusable hard carry case.

Bond Arms Backup

Bond Arms is a leader in modern firearms based on the classic derringer design. These two-shot, self defense firearms are available in a variety of calibers ranging from .22 to .410, and now they offer the Backup. This model is specially designed to meet the needs of law enforcement and military members based on the feedback received. Like all Bond models, the Backup features patented rebound hammer, retractable firing pins, cross-bolt safety, and spring-loaded cammed locking lever. Plus, the textured frame and bead-blasted barrel are anti-glare for better concealment.

Intercept Free 2 Tone Barrier Gloves

There was a time when you needed to protect against blood borne pathogens; now the danger is far worse. Now you need to prevent accidental overdose. Intercept Free 2 Tone Barrier Gloves do just that. They are barrier tested against heroin and fentanyl, latex free, and also safe for use with chemotherapy drugs. Specific barrier test data is available from the manufacturer. The combination of textured and smooth fingertips allows for improved grip without interfering with touch or instrument control. The white palm allows instant notification of exposure to bodily fluids or chemicals.

The Magpul Bipod

Magpul has made a name for themselves when it comes to rifle accessories, and now they are your source for quality tactical bi-pods as well. The Magpul Bipod is available in your choice of three mounting options, includes large push button locks and adjustment knobs for easy use with gloved hands, and utilizes a combination of mil-spec aluminum, stainless steel, and polymer for top of the line strength. You can have the premium features without the premium price.

Gargoyles Homeland Glasses

There was a time when no safety-minded (or fashion-minded) officer was without a pair of Gargoyles. They were legendary for claiming their lenses would stop buckshot, and proved it through numerous tests and personal testimonies. Now, you can update your wardrobe and range attire with the new Homeland series. The retro frames offer a more casual look without sacrificing safety. With ANSI Protection +, 100% UV protection, and your choice of either RX-compatible or polarized lenses, you never need to worry that your eyes are safe from a wide range of hazards. Plus, the Gargoyles “Do the right thing” warranty allows peace of mind, whether the failure is theirs or yours.
