Enjoy the Olympics, But Beware the US is Watching You

There is no doubt that the Olympics are an incredible sporting event that brings together people from all over the world. Unfortunately, not everyone has the Olympic spirit and some terrorist organizations would very much like to carry out an attack there. That is the very reason that this event has some of the tightest security that has ever been done on the planet. There is a visible presence from not only police and other law enforcement, but even the Brazilian military is in on this massive effort. One security aspect that has not been so visible is the clandestine roles that over 1000 US security personnel are playing to help keep the games safe.

The security at this Olympics has already been a big concern because of its location. Rio de Janeiro is a sprawling city that is very violent and impoverished in many areas. Add to that the fact that Brazil itself has been plagued by riots and other turmoil over the last few years and you have the potential for some real trouble.

SecurityWith that much political unrest and poverty in a country, it is the type of place that can become a breeding ground for terror. ISIS and other extremely active terror groups have already put the world on edge with terrorist acts they have committed in France and other parts of the world. These groups seem to have the innate ability to influence those in society who are disenchanted with the status quo in their respective countries. Evidence of this is the arrest by the FBI of several Brazilians thought to have links to ISIS just days before the games started.

The existence of the clandestine presence by US personnel was leaked to the media as the games started despite the fact it was an “ultra-classified” undertaking (the type our politicians love to let slip and yet they get away with it). It was said that the group of so called “spies” from the US was there on behalf of the Brazilian government and with their blessing. The group consists of law enforcement officers and other personnel from some 17 government organizations.

There is apparently no stone being left unturned by the personnel that are present there as they have also brought an array of high end surveillance technology with them too. They have been said to have deployed various listening devices, satellite observation, social media monitoring and there is even rumors they have brought sophisticated surveillance drones too. These personnel are there in addition to those military personnel that were already scheduled to be there helping the Brazilian law enforcement agencies and military secure the games. It is also said that the US has highly trained counter terrorism teams standing by should they be needed.

It shows the Olympics is not only a sporting event that brings the world closer together, but also an event where the finest security teams that can be found around the world are lending a hand too to keep the participants and fans safe.
