So the festive season is nearly on us again, and most of us will be looking at getting gifts for the special people in our lives. If you’re reading this blog, there’s a good chance some of your nearest and dearest are in the military or law enforcement, do contract work or love the outdoors- so a practical gift could be very welcome. It might be a new bit of gear they’ve talked about, a replacement for something you know is wearing out, or just a thoughtful little item that can make their life easier. Here are a few suggestions.
Multi-tools are one of the must-have items for anyone who gets out there and does stuff. Combining a pocket knife with an array of other handy appliances, these gadgets are invaluable for maintaining weapons, vehicles and electronics. From tiny items like CRKT’s Colombia River Sport to top of the line Leathermans and Gerbers, there’s always one that suits your budget and the needs of the recipient.
Anyone who works in a military or LE job probably has a decent flashlight already, but this is an area where the technology is racing ahead; they’ll probably appreciate a shiny new one with better performance and more features. Modern pocket lights are amazingly powerful thanks to LED technology, and many of them have extra modes like strobe or SOS. Some even have multiple colors of LED lights built in.
Clothes are a popular gift option, and if you’re buying for a military or security pro you don’t need to restrict yourself to socks or an embarrassing cardigan. There’s a wide array of useful items out there, from field jackets to gloves, or you could go with a T-shirt for off-duty wear – these are always welcome.
If you’re looking for a more significant gift, then how about a watch? The average watch isn’t going to survive too long in an operational environment, but there are plenty of tougher models that are built to take it. A watch is something that will serve as a frequent reminder of you, too – it’s going to get checked many times a day, after all.
It’s also nice to give novelty gifts that will bring some amusement, and it’s even better if these are useful too. Bullet keyrings have been around for a while, but there are some handy variations on the theme that don’t just look good on your keys. How about a .308 caliber bottle opener, or a .30-06 pen? These are useful in their own right but a bit quirky too.
There are plenty of other small items around that make ideal gifts with a military theme, and a lot of scope for using your imagination. Christmas is a great time to give something helpful that also shows your appreciation for your loved one’s service. And, if you choose well, it’s a gift with a double benefit. It will make a positive difference to their life, and every time they use it they’ll be reminded of you.
