As the US continues to decrease its military size, China is doing the opposite. It was recently announced that the Chinese government has added three new units to its already massive standing army. In a somewhat odd announcement, China also said it plans to reduce its force by about 300,000- bringing it down to just over 2 million.
The new units are said to have been created in order to help China improve its battle readiness as well as a way of modernizing the force. China’s President, Xi Jinping, handed out ceremonial flags to the commanders of the new units. The units are reported as being a strategic support force, a missile unit, and a command center to the People’s Liberation Army.
In a brief speech, the president said that the creation of the new units would help the Chinese people “to realize the Chinese dream of a strong military.” He also said it was needed in order to modernize the country’s military force- which is reported to be 2.3 million. As mentioned above, plans are to cut about 300,000 personnel soon. He also went on to express his continued desire that “the great renewal of the Chinese nation” will be successful and he said that a larger and more modern military is an essential part of this undertaking.
In addition to the new troops and units, China also plans on replacing older equipment (including weapon systems) with new gear, spending more on advanced weapon technology, and improving troop training.
The timing on this is of importance as China has already begun pressing for contested land in the South China Sea and the East China Sea. These actions have significantly increased tensions in these areas as well as with the US.
