People carry EDC items for a variety of reasons. However, usually it boils down to the desire to be prepared for emergencies so that they can take care of themselves and others.
Carrying more than one EDC item has a number of advantages. For example, if you lose one, you will have a backup that will prevent you from being totally stranded. Another benefit is that you do not have to worry about your original EDC breaking because you have a backup. One of the best parts of having a backup EDC item is that you have more versatility. But with all the options out there, how could you possibly choose just a few? Below is a list of typical EDC items to consider so you can make an informed decision.
In many ways, this is my personal favorite backup EDC item, because it meets a multitude of potential needs.
Fortunately, multi-tools are becoming smaller, lighter, more compact, and less expensive, while at the same time continuing to increase in functionality and usability. Having a backup multi-tool in your bag, purse, backpack, glove box, or jacket is a super easy way to prepare for whatever kind of situation life might throw at you. Also, you will have access to a variety of tools that can be used in many different ways.
No matter what your primary EDC items are, having a backup flashlight is always a good idea. Since most of us have a flashlight on our phones already, you no longer have to carry two keychains or pocket flashlights in order to have a backup. Instead, you can just have one, which frees up room for other EDC items.
There are tons of options when it comes to flashlights. However, one of the coolest innovations of late is the ability to charge small flashlights via a USB port. Since most people are around some sort of technology during the day, this can ensure that you are never caught with a dead battery.
Whether you are walking to your car after work and the power goes out, or there is a zombie apocalypse and you are trapped in a dark basement, you will never be sorry that you carried a backup EDC flashlight.
If you are an old-school type of person when it comes to illumination, a lighter is a great thing to have in your EDC arsenal. Although they really can’t compete with a nice flashlight when it comes to illumination power, lighters do have the added feature of allowing you to start a fire if you are in an emergency situation. It can mean the difference between life and death. Having a solid lighter as one of your backup EDC items will hardly take up any room and will provide you with a great deal of peace of mind.
There are a ton of keychain lighters out there that will do the trick just fine. However, you will definitely want to make sure that the lighter you get is waterproof and windproof so you can use it even in less than ideal conditions.
At first glance, having a pen with you as an EDC item may not seem like it would serve much purpose. However, pens today are not just your average pens. They seem to have had their own little revolution. Your most basic tactical pen will have the ability to write regardless of the condition (upside down, in the rain, etc.) and will have a built-in glass breaker. Take it up a notch, and you will find pens that have built in flashlights and are designed for self-defense. Ultimately, a good tactical pen could potentially save your life. They are tiny, lightweight, and you will hardly even know it is there. Until you need it, that is.
Why Have Backups
Having a full stocked EDC makes you m0re responsible, prepared, and dependable. The next step in the process is making sure that your EDC item is backed up sufficiently to prepare you for anything and everything.
Some of the best tools to consider when looking for backup EDC items include slim, compact, lightweight multi-tools; EDC-style flashlights; waterproof, windproof lighters; and quality tactical pens. Having them within easy reach can make a world of difference in an emergency.
