An Old Fashioned Christmas

Did you have one of those “practical” relatives? The ones who always bought you gifts you needed rather than wanted? If so, you probably have memories of unwrapping socks and underwear while your friends tore into boxes of Tonka trucks and G.I. Joe toys. But now you are an adult and an old fashioned Christmas of socks and skivvies might be just what you need to keep you warm on a long winter shift.

I was one of those kids and had one of those practical relatives. Every Christmas morning I could count on at least one package of tube socks. I soon adopted the firm belief that the only socks that should be near a Christmas tree were those hanging from the mantle. Then, I started standing winter night guard duty followed by January foot patrols. It wasn’t long before I was asking for socks and thermals to help keep me from turning into an icicle. If this is the position you now find yourself in, maybe you should pass along the following wish list.

UNDER ARMOUR TAC BASE CREW SHIRTUnder Armor Tac Base Set – first there were the old fashioned white thermals – the one with the waffle pattern. They were warm, but only if thick (and bulky) enough. Then, there was the compression cold gear. They were able to provide the same protection in a thin, lightweight design – but compression gear can get uncomfortable when it covers you from head to toe. The Tac Base is the best of both worlds. Close fitting without the restriction of compression and a dual layer design with a sleek performance outer surface and a brushed inner layer for extra comfort. Plus, you still get the benefit of UA’s moisture wicking technology to keep you dry throughout the entire shift. Tac Base offers both a crew top and matching pants in a tactical tan color.

Darn Tough Merino Wool Cushion Tactical Boot Sock – sometimes tried and true beats modern technology. Although today’s poly-based materials are capable of providing outstanding protection from the elements, odor protection and comfort wool is the original performance fabric. Merino wool is known as being naturally flame resistant and antimicrobial – and few materials are as insulating as wool.  Darn Tough has combined the natural abilities of wool with a superior design to provide a pair of top notch boot socks perfect for a long march or hours of standing post. Full terry loop cushioning, elastic arc support and a snug fit provide warmth, comfort and blister-free wear time after time. Whether you chose black, coyote brown or foliage green you will enjoy the same great features.

It is said that history repeats itself and attitudes change with age. I guess the same can be said about Christmas gifts. What was once a dreaded part of the holiday gift exchange can now be a long-awaited pleasure. With this in mind, maybe you should give socks and skivvies another try.
