Deep down, Americans have known further terror attacks were possible, even imminent, but the image of would be terrorists may have blinded us to the real threat. While everyone was on the lookout for a redneck waving a Confederate flag or a radical Muslim shouting “Death to the Infidel!” no one was watching the couple down the street.
On Wednesday Dec. 2nd, afternoon holiday shopping was interrupted by yet another report of a mass shooting. This time the target was reported to be a large business complex in San Bernardino County California which housed the corporate headquarters for a social services organization. Initial reports were sketchy at best and seemed to focus on the possibility that the attackers were homegrown in nature and suggested links to the recent Planned Parenthood shooting. By the time it was over, an entirely different picture would develop.
Following a massive manhunt and running car chase gun battle with police, two assailants laid dead only blocks from the original attack. But neither of the attackers fit the typical profile. The man and woman killed by local authorities were not government hating homegrown separatists, nor were they foreign radicals smuggled over the border under the cover of night. Syed Rizwan Farook, 28, and his foreign-born wife Tashfeen Malik, 29, may have been Muslim but that is where the stereotype ends.
Farook was a U.S. born county health inspector while his wife Malik legally immigrated to the U.S. in 2014 reportedly to marry Farook. Although neither appears to have developed any close ties with co-workers or neighbors, they were not known to authorities or relatives as being radical in thought or behavior. Nonetheless, they stockpiled firearms, ammunition and bomb-making materials in their middle class Redland home in a room adjacent to their 6 month old daughter’s crib. They walked into a county holiday party and coldly murdered 14 and wounded over 20 of Farook’s coworkers. The same coworkers he had spent day after day with for over 5 years and who had thrown the couple a baby shower earlier this year.
Clearly they had planned this attack for some time as evidenced by the mass amount of supplies found both in their rented SUV and home. It is also clear that they were well under the radar while preparing for and conducting this attack. No one noticed anything suspicious. Not their relatives, not their coworkers and not their neighbors. While we may never know exactly what caused a middle class couple living the “American Dream” to become terrorists, we now know terror has a new face – our quiet neighbor down the street.
